Spiritual and social dimensions of aging and caregiving comprise the 2009 theme for this
biennial conference. The conference connects people with information and
resources to enhance successful aging for older adults and their families, and the organi-
zations, professionals and researchers who serve them. In grateful collaboration with
many volunteers, the partners for this conference include: The Center for Healthy Aging,
Ministries, Programs and Services (CHAMPS); the University of Nebraska at Omaha
Department of Gerontology, Life Long Learning Initiative, and School of Social Work; the
United Way of the Midlands; the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging and Nebraska Respite
Network; Immanuel Senior Living; and the six-county Partnerships in Aging (PIA) Network.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Lisa P. Gwyther is Associate Professor in the Dept. of Psychiatry and Be-
havioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC, a Core
Faculty member of the Institute on Care at the End of Life at the Duke Divin-
ity School and a Senior Fellow of Duke's Center for the Study of Aging and
Human Development. In 1980, she started the Duke University Center for
Aging's Alzheimer's Family Support Program. Ms. Gwyther directs education
for the Joseph and Kathleen Bryan Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at
Duke University Medical Center.
Lela Knox-Shanks is a local advocate for caregivers, an authority on
caregiving for persons with Alzheimer's Disease and the author of Your
Name is Hughes Hannibal Shanks: A Caregiver's Guide to Alzheimer's. In
her book, she sets forth the knowledge and wisdom that allowed her to care
for her husband, a victim of Alzheimer's, for thirteen years. She holds a de-
gree in journalism.

The Conference cost covers the continental breakfast, Monday luncheon, refreshment breaks and
all conference materials and sessions. Registrations must be received by October 8th.

check or money order payable to CHAMPS, must accompany all conference registrations received

Nebraska at Omaha campus, Milo Bail Student Center, located at 6001 Dodge Street. Registration
will take place in the hallway outside the entrance to the Ball Room on the second floor.

Continuing Education Credit Information
Continuing Education Credit provided by Iowa Western Community College,
IBN Provider #6.
Continuing education credit is available for: Social Workers, Nursing Home Administrators,
Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, Medical Assistants,
Physical Therapists, and Occupational Therapists. Professionals are responsible for determining
the criteria for their specific profession.
In order to obtain Continuing Education Credit through Iowa Western Community College,
participants must provide their social security number at the time of the UNO Conference on Aging.
Participants wishing to have continuing education credit must register at the beginning of each day
of the conference. A Continuing Education Certificate will be provided for each day attended.
October 18: 3.6 Contact Hours / 3.6 CEUs October 19: 6 Contact Hours / .6 CEUs
