Fall Conference On Aging

Aging with Passion and Purpose, a conference on aging will be held at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, on October 21 and 22, 2007. The Center for Healthy Aging, Ministries, Programs and Services (CHAMPS), the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Department of Gerontology, School of Social Work and Program for Women and Successful Aging (PWSA) and United Way of the Midlands are partners in this conference. Sunday, October 21, keynote Anne Basting, Ph.D., will be followed by workshops focused on creativity and aging in addition to workshops on spirituality and congregational care for older adults. Monday, October 22, keynote Gene Cohen, M.D., will be followed by presentations focused on bridging theory and practice related to community efforts, creativity and spirituality.

Gene Cohen , Ph, D., is the Director of the Center on Aging, Health and Humanities at George Washington University, where he holds the positions of Professor of Health Care Sciences and Professor of Psychiatry. He is the author of many books including The Mature Mind and The Creative Age and is founding director of the Washington, D. C., Center on Aging and past president of the Gerontological Society of America.

Anne Basting , Ph.D., who in 1998, developed the Time Slips Project which has generated hundreds of stories that are used to rekindle the hope for human connection among people struggling with Alzheimer's Disease and related dementia. Time Slips marks a fundamental shift away from focusing on memory and reminiscence, toward encouraging people with memory loss to exercise their imaginations and creativity.
